Whitney Houston -can I be me?-Nick Broomfield-made after her death

Notes from watching-
5th December 2023 Findings from Can I be me?-had a long career- she gor into the charts as a black woman which was rare at the time her mother thought she stole her style -her mother was a singer but didnt get the same recognition and her family worked for her rather than with her at a show she was booed and it took her a while to get over it as she felt hopeless there were rumours about her relationship and sexuality and after her death her mother said she would not accept it due to religion she wasnt prepared for the enormous fame after the bodyguard and she was overwhelmed that she couldnt go out anymore without taking photos and signing autographs-she felt paranoid her music was pop-unusual for blck women-she didnt want to fit into a certainb type-she wanted to make her music her own she said 'success doesnt change you, fame does'and she says that to be successful you dont need to be famous and fame doesnt always mean success she said'money doesnt make you happy' 'fame doesnt make you happy' she said 'you need to know who you are before fame' -people make assumptions and rumours so its important to believe youre not that person drugs were given to her by her brther from her teen years-drugs became a necessity not just for fun anymore -she said she was the monster ,not the drink or drugs she missed her daughter wjhilst performing and stayed in her marriage with Bobby Brown for thre sake of Bobbi Kristina she and he husband , Bobby mixed drinks and drugs together and made it worse for each other there was chaos between Bobby and Robyn which cause her to use more drugs her father had a lawsuit against her-she always thought that out of her mum and dad that he was more on her side than her mother but this broke her trust she couldnt find time for herself as she was performing all of the time after her marriage ended with Bobby she turned to drugs even more It was made after her death which shows that she couldnt have a say about it
Whitney was not involved in the making of the documentary as shed already died. This shows it was not just a way to increase her fame but rather to show her problems and acheivements in her life
Her family wasnt involved in the making of it whcih shows that it is less biased towrads her being perfect-it also revealed information about her sexuality which shows it shares real insider information as she didnt want people to knnow due to her religion
Who made it
Nick Broomfield made it after her death
Purpose and involvement
She obviously wasnt involved because it was after her death-It shows a lot about her life and career but also shows negative parts of her life-she sidnt know that the cips would be used
Critical reviews
Whitney. "Can I Be Me provides a compelling portrait of a supreme talent isolated by fame, dysfunctional relationships and a crushing drug habit, slowly diminished by the same qualities that originally made her a superstar.
While the documentary offers strong concert performances and an array of opinions on her enormous talent and tragic demise from those in her band, her entourage, friends and family, it contains no major revelations.
Broomfield tells the story of a star who feels in her inmost heart that success on this unimaginable level is not really deserved and has to be paid for with private unhappiness and a costly, painful maintenance of family and entourage loyalties. One commentator remarks sagely: “One of the things about being rich is that your family are dependent on you in one way or another. Or actually work for you.”
Conclusion and link to my EPQ
Overall I think that the docuemntary was a way of explaining what led to her death whilst also celebrating parts of her fame and it links to my EPQ as it was effective in showing how negative impacts of fame may have been the reasons for her death therefore it is a useful documentary
