Notes from watching-
2023 -directed by Chris Smith -after George Michaels death-were old when made so they had a lot of experience and no reason to make any more documentaries-old interviews from george and andrew -they couldnt believe that 2 idiots get this big -'felt like a dream' -people werent taking their writing seriously as they were young -George thought he was less good looking but all of a sudden it was the opposite and andrew was his shadow -they were determinded to be noticed for what they actually did-'it doesnt make any sense really(fame),non of them could get use to it-it took them both by surprise-addictive-just wanted to live in the moment-andrew didnt want to feel defined by the music-george just wanted to be proud of the songs-george was too young and immature to recognise what he was sacrificing when hiding his sexuality but knew it would change everyones opinions of him-used andrew as his support system-andrew was his idol-andrew never gave upp on foorming the band even when parents disapproved-andrew was named 'animal andy' after being spotted with girls which took the focus off of georges private life-george would 'clam up around other pop stars'-george set them goals like getting 4 number ones in one year-surpised about their success in america-andrew didnt want anymore of it -george felt trapped because of his sexuality-andrew didnt mind george expanding with others but was tired oof being second all of the time so he was ready for it to come to an end -had an overwhelming feeling of pride after seeing the impression theyd made on people after just 4 years-they knew that the band would never be middle aged -it was enjoyment for their youth
Who made it
Chris Smith-American film maker
Purpose and involvement
George was not involved as it was after his death-All of the clips were from when they were young , not knowing they would be put in a documentary which shows they arent acting, even the voices over the clips are from years before the documentary,The purpose may have been to show the positive and negative impacts of being famous as a young adult and to in general show the highs and lows of the band
Critical reviews
the film, which creates a dialogue between recent interviews with Ridgeley and older archive recordings of Michael, pays tribute to the close bond between the two Bushey Meads school friends who found themselves living the dream. But it also explores the cost to the then closeted Michael of the teen heart-throb persona he was forced to wear along with his canary-yellow Fila tennis shorts.
Conclusion and link to my EPQ-Overall,I think the film plays tribute to George Michael and the band and wasnt too orientated about just their career but also their lives behind it.It links to my EPQ as it shows how documentaries can show effects of fame even after death and the fact that george michael had died shows that the person doesnt need to be alive and controlling the making of the documentary to compliment their career
